Introduction to SAP Joule

In this blog, we’ll take a look at quick look at SAP’s AI product called Joule, Its product family, real-world use cases, how you can start using it, where it’s available, and how to learn more.

Firstly, What Is SAP Joule?

It’s AI everywhere at the moment and it is no different for SAP either. SAP Joule is an AI powered copilot built into the SAP ecosystem. Think of Joule as your personalised ChatGPT for your organisation that works across your SAP cloud products. Its job is to understand your company’s data and processes, give you instant answers, automate routine work, and make SAP easier for everyone in the organisation whether you work in HR, Finance, Procurement, or IT.

For example, you can ask Joule questions like, “What was the sales last month in Germany” or “Who made the most number of sales in North America” or “Provide me with a list of employees in the organisation who has got certification in S/4HANA Finance“. Through these type of questions, you can get answers faster and it will reduce the amount of time spent on navigating through multiple screens and running various reports.

Let’s take a look at the Joule Product Family.

SAP has developed a suite of Joule products to serve different users:

  1. Joule (The AI Copilot): Embedded in core SAP cloud apps, it helps employees complete tasks, get insights, and access documentation using natural language commands or chat-style questions.
  2. Joule Agents: Pre-built AI helpers that handle complex tasks for you—like automating HR onboarding, sorting invoices, or handling procurement bids. Currently, SAP is offering Joule agents for business functions such as Finance, Supply Chain, Human Resource, Procurement, Customer Experience, Transformation Management and for some particular industries.
  3. Joule for Consultants: An AI assistant designed for SAP consultants, which provides project guidance, best practices, smart documentation search, and even code analysis—speeding up implementation work.
  4. Joule for Developers: Integrated with SAP Build and the wider development toolkit, it can generate code, explain logic, automate testing, and build workflows, all with simple prompts. Great for both new and experienced SAP developers. It is built on 250 million lines of ABAP code including all the best practices to develop a really good ABAP program for your organisation.
  5. AI Foundation: The underlying technology platform on SAP BTP that powers all Joule features—managing data, AI models, governance, and custom agent creation for any scenario.

Now, Let’s walk through real examples for each Joule module:

  • HR / SuccessFactors: Joule agent helps an HR manager by predicting which employees are at risk of leaving and suggests development plans. For example, you can prompt*: “Show me employees at high attrition risk this quarter.”*
  • Finance / S/4HANA Cloud: An Accounts Receivable agent reviews overdue payments, reminds customers, and flags high-risk debt, helping to reduce write-offs.
  • Procurement / Ariba: Procurement agent analyzes supplier bids automatically and suggests top suppliers, speeding up sourcing events.
  • Consulting: With “Joule for Consultants”, a consultant can ask, “How do I convert SAP ECC to S/4HANA Cloud?” and get step-by-step, SAP-sanctioned best practices plus ABAP code explanations as required.
  • Developer: In SAP Build, a dev can say, “Create a new app to manage employee travel requests,” and Joule generates the base application, including UI, data model, and automation—even for those new to SAP development.

For which SAP products is Joule available at the moment

  • S/4HANA Cloud (Public & Private): Joule is embedded and natively available in both public and private cloud editions of S/4HANA. All new features and updates come here first.
  • It is also available for SAP’s Cloud Applications such as SuccessFactors, Ariba, BTP Build Apps and Concur and it will be rolled out in a phased approach for other applications like SAP Integrated Business Planning and Customer Experience Solutions in the near future.

How to Learn More About SAP Joule

You can learn more about SAP Joule in three places.

  • And finally on YouTube. You can just search SAP Joule and you will be able to find videos about it on SAP’s official website.

To wrap-Up

  • Joule is changing how users interact with SAP—making tasks faster, data smarter, and work more enjoyable. Now-a-days users interact with SAP via SAPGUI and FIORI launchpads but going forward, users will start interacting with SAP mainly through it’s Gen AI interface, Joule. SAP consultants and users do not need to remember the transactions and navigations to get their work done. Instead, they can prompt Joule and it will get things done for the users.
